How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?
Speed is rarely the problem on a Nordic connection. Stability is. Here is how much you need, how to check what you have, and what to fix first when the picture stutters.
Speed needed per quality
| Quality | Steady speed | Data per hour |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 5 Mbit/s | ≈ 1 GB |
| HD 720p | 10 Mbit/s | ≈ 2 GB |
| Full HD 1080p | 15 Mbit/s | ≈ 3 GB |
| 4K 2160p | 25 Mbit/s | ≈ 7 GB |
These numbers are per screen. If two people watch Full HD in different rooms while someone else is on a video call, you need roughly 15 + 15 + 5 = 35 Mbit/s.
How to test your connection properly
Run the speed test on the device you will watch on, not on your phone, and run it in the evening between 19:00 and 22:00, when networks are busiest. Most streaming sticks have a browser or a speed-test app. On a Fire TV Stick, the free Analiti app works.
Look at two numbers: download speed and how much it varies between tests. A line that gives 40, 38 and 41 Mbit/s is better for IPTV than one that gives 200, 30 and 150.
Fix Wi-Fi before you upgrade your line
In our support inbox, Wi-Fi causes far more buffering than slow broadband. In order of effect:
- Use a network cable from the router to the TV or box. For a Fire TV Stick, an Ethernet adapter is cheap.
- Use the 5 GHz band, not 2.4 GHz, if the router is in the same or the next room.
- Move the router out of cupboards and away from the floor.
- Add a mesh point near the TV if the router is far away.
Mobile broadband and the cabin
4G and 5G home broadband is common in Finland and at Nordic cabins and summer houses. It handles Full HD well when the signal is good. Put the router by a window facing the nearest mast, and pick Full HD rather than 4K to save data and leave headroom for signal dips.

Does IPTV use a lot of data?
About 3 GB per hour in Full HD and 7 GB per hour in 4K. On an unlimited fixed or 5G plan this does not matter; on a capped mobile plan it adds up quickly.
Why does IPTV buffer when my speed test is fast?
Speed tests measure a short burst. IPTV needs a steady stream for hours. Wi-Fi interference, a busy evening network or a weak TV Wi-Fi chip can cause drops a speed test never shows. A network cable fixes most cases.
